Conscious Pilot in Stationery Business Directory

As near as memory can pinpoint, the concept of “What the Hell?” began in early 1987 under the little-thought-about title, “Story Starters”. Although somewhat appropriate, this title was extremely limiting, lacked character, and didn’t prepare the reader for what was to be experienced. “What the Hell?” started as a compilation of short sayings, re-engineered nursery rhymes and proverbs, and many brief snapshots from the lives of people who, thankfully, do not exist. It was a sort of “bulletin of insanity” that was co-written by my best friend Eric Schlehlein and me. The early bulletins contained fewer than thirty items, and for a long time after, they lay dormant in a folder in my bedroom closet. As time went on, it became apparent that there were more “What the Hells waiting to come out. I became the sole contributor for quite some time, and am therefore largely to blame for most of this. My brother, Mike Bautz, eventually began to contribute, and had many strange items included. The Rise of Conscious Pilot. Since I was into creating more than just disembodied comic captions, it seemed to make sense to have a fictitious publishing company to put over all of my creative pursuits. Song lyrics, poetry, and drawings were all attributed to Conscious Pilot, though I dont know who was or is piloting my consciousness. During my slow, winding path through college, I got completely fed up with trying to find greeting cards for my friends and family that were actually funny. So, I decided to make my own cards with What the Hells serving as captions. Some of the cards on this site are based on the hand-drawn originals I gave out several years ago. As the inner voices telling me to publish the cards became louder and increasingly difficult to ignore, it only made sense to make Conscious Pilot a reality. With the explosion of the Net, it obviously became possible to reach a vast audience and self-publishing the cards seemed more realistic. Becoming extremely disillusioned with the so-called real world didnt hurt either. I also believe that my wife, Rhonda, enabled Conscious Pilot to finally come to life. In addition to coming up with the final concept for the company logo, she has given me the drive to pursue the dream I had stifled for over 10 years. She has been there with support, encouragement and not a small bit of advice. Giving people a look at what is inside of you can be a risky endeavor. This is especially true when they are looking at what comes from the most extreme aspects of who you are. I felt that before you get too far down the strange path that lies ahead, you might benefit from a bit of counseling. Some of what you will find may cause groaning, disgust, confusion, and possibly actual physical discomfort. An extremely warped sense of humor will aid you greatly. Take nothing too closely to heart, and certainly never personally. So sit back and take in small doses.
