Captain Jim Barrett is the author of A Manual for the Mounted Officer. This first-of-a-kind manual handles all aspects of the mounted unit from horse selection to managing a successful unit. Captain Jim Barrett is an expert in the world of police horses. In his 25 years of involvement, he is a trainer, supervisor and the manager of one of the most successful units in Southern California. During his tenure with the Ventura County Sheriffs Department Mounted Enforcement Unit he has seen the unit grow from three original riders, increasing to 25 riders who work several hundred details each year. Jim is one of the founding board members of the California Mounted Officers Association (CMOA); a statewide organization dedicated to the betterment of the mounted officer. Captain Barrett has served as both the statewide training coordinator as well as the president of CMOA where he obtained insight into the needs of mounted officers throughout the United States. He has also completed a number of mounted schools to include the LAPD Police Horse Academy, as well as the Sacramento Sheriffs Department Basic, Update, and Instructors Courses. He continues to expand his knowledge about horses with the completion of the Richard Shrake Certification process among other experiences. Jim conducts training seminars for law enforcement organizations as well as civilians throughout the United States. His training courses on bomb-proofing the equine have met with acclaim wherever he presents them.
