We expect books for children to lend themselves to reading aloud by adults. In writing the four novels in ‘Leaps and Bounds’ I’ve kept this very much in mind. & There are, it seems to me, two main ways of reading aloud. The first way, you stick to the text and only stop reading if your listener (he or she = Alex), asks you to for instance to explain something. You don’t expect many questions and may not even welcome them. This way, Alex might almost be listening to someone on the radio - an exaggeration - but by and large you expect Alex to be a passive listener.
